Due to COVID-19 pandemic that has insisted school shut down not only in Sri Lanka but the entire world, many parents of children who attend Montessori schools are now challenged with the new reality of educating their children at home, often while working at the same time!

There will be various new things to relate as you embark on this new adventure, but first off, try not to worry! You have what it takes to support and nurture your child’s learning experience! Remember, you were your child’s first teacher and you as a parent are highly capable of being an intern educator and partner with your school during this unpredictable period in history.

The purpose os this Note is to share some practical tips and considerations for parents who are embarking on this temporary homeschooling journey for the first time.

The “ Routine ” of your homeschooling day.

  • Adjust your mindset about how children learn: you might have been educated in a traditional classroom and never before spent time in a Montessori Classroom or experienced homeschooling firsthand.

  • Children do not need to be sitting at the table for 6 hours a day doing work with you as the teacher, lecturing or imparting knowledge. ( what can be gained in a 6 hour school day can be easily gained in 2-3 hours in a homeschool setting).

  • You aren't responsible for directly instructing, directing, or entertaining your child all day long. Drop your guilt you might be feeling if you are trying to get engage yourself in some work. You are allowed to tell your children to entertain and occupy themselves ( they might misuse this freedom, but you can set limits for them ) and in fact, it is good for them, because boredom inspires creativity. Your children can be working independently on a multitude of activities: reading, writing , creating projects, doing helpful chores around the house. There are many possibilities!
